QUEENSLAND Local Government Minister Desley Boyle says a new $9m sewerage system in Hughenden has replaced an old clay pipe network built in the 1940s.
The new sewerage system is supported by $4.4m in State funding.
“Hughenden’s sewerage network was one of the oldest in Queensland, with the black clay soil in the area contributing to cracking the original earthenware pipes which were also damaged by tree roots and wet-season flood waters,” Ms Boyle said.
“The new sewerage network will alleviate the health risks posed by effluent overflow and ground contamination and will make sure the town’s essential infrastructure can cope with future growth.”
Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan says 16km of new sewerage pipeline has been laid and two pumps stations upgraded.
“The new system will have the capacity to treat 450,000 litres of sewerage each day, with the effluent passing through trickle filter and sedimentation tank processes before the treated waste is dried and buried,” Mrs Kiernan said.
