Veolia Water given license to sell recycled wastewater in Sydney

VEOLIA Water has been granted a license from the NSW Government to recycle and sell wastewater from the Fairfield Sewage Treatment Plant.

The Fairfield Sewage Treatment Plant produces around 4.3b litres of treated water every year.

Veolia Water says the treated water will be transported through a 20km network of retrofitted gas pipes to places like Rosehill Racecourse and the Shell refinery in the Sydney suburb of Clyde.

NSW Premier Nathan Rees claims the deal will secure Sydney’s water supply for the next 50 years. It is the first time that a private company has been allowed to build a water recycling plant in Australia, he says.

According to Rees, this recycled water arrangement, combined with the desalination plant, will ensure the city’s dam levels, which are currently just below 60%, will remain high.
